Robert Bergman, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), is a board-certified veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Matthews with extensive experience in advanced neurology, complex spinal surgery, clinical leadership, research, and veterinary education.

Professional Accomplishments
Over the past five years, Dr. Bergman has traveled extensively to specialty hospitals and universities to perform advanced spinal surgeries and collaborate on complex neurosurgical cases. This work has provided him with the opportunity to perform a high volume of advanced spinal procedures across multiple institutions—experience that extends beyond the case volume typically encountered within a single specialty practice. This continued exposure to challenging cases and advanced surgical techniques further strengthens the depth of experience he brings to each patient.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Bergman is deeply committed to teaching veterinary neurosurgery. He has had the opportunity to teach around the world and has been involved with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) as well as AO, an international surgical education platform.
His professional interests bring together clinical practice, research, innovation, and education—with the goal of continuing to advance what is possible for veterinary neurological and neurosurgical patients
Dr. Bergman has a long history with Carolina Veterinary Specialists. He joined CVS as a staff neurologist in 2003, helping establish the original neurology service in the Charlotte region. During his previous tenure, he also served in medical leadership roles, including Medical Director and later Chief Medical Officer.
After continuing his work in specialty veterinary medicine, leadership, teaching, and neurosurgery, Dr. Bergman is returning his clinical focus to Carolina Veterinary Specialists.
“I started the original neurology service in 2003 and have seen veterinary care in the Charlotte region change quite a bit. I look forward to reconnecting with many of the veterinarians in the area and making new relationships.”
Outside of neurology and neurosurgery, Dr. Bergman is an avid heavy metal music fan and enjoys attending metal shows whenever time allows. At home, he and his family share life with Opal, their self-described ‘badly behaved’ Chiweenie.
Dr. Bergman looks forward to reconnecting with the Greater Charlotte veterinary community, developing new relationships with referring veterinarians, and once again providing advanced neurological and neurosurgical care to patients throughout the region.

Dr. Bergman has a particular interest in solving some of the more complex neurosurgical challenges encountered in small animal medicine. His areas of focus include:
- Advanced spinal surgery
- Spinal stabilization and fusion
- Pedicle screw stabilization
- Spinal trauma
- Development of new neurosurgical procedures and implants
- Cervical spondylomyelopathy
- Comparative neurosurgery, applying knowledge from human diseases and procedures to advance veterinary neurosurgical care
